The concept of promotions has been around for thousands of years, and regardless of which type of business you happen to be referring to there will always be some type of promotional programme in place to lure newcomers in. Such is the case with free bets. At their very basic level, free bets are promotional bets that allow newcomers the opportunity to get a taste of the action with relatively no risk involved. They are generally extremely small bets placed at betting sites, such as one or two pounds. The payouts are generally just as small, but the beauty of free bets is that it allows individuals to whet their appetite without putting any significant money on the line, and once they have won a few bets they are more likely to get involved in online betting and internet gambling.

Companies like William Hill will sometimes offer a promotional programme where an individual is allowed 25 pounds of free bets, or a matching bet promotion where newcomers can place a bet between five and 25 pounds and the company will match their bet up to 25 pounds, thus allowing the newcomer the opportunity to double their bet without investing their own cash. If they win, they are more likely to place an additional bet, and if they lose they are not out that much money and may feel more comfortable making an additional bet to try and win the money back.
