The Ins and Outs of Sports Betting

July 05, 2010

There are a number of betting systems used above and beyond simple wagers made on games, although whether or not they are used depends on where in the world an individual is betting from, and whether or not it is a bet made between friends or through a bookmaker. For example, someone might bet their co-worker a friendly wager as to whether or not their favourite football team will win a certain match, which is nothing more than a simple wager. Professional sports betting, however, is always done through a bookmaker.

A bookmaker is more commonly known by their nickname: a bookie. A bookie is an individual or organization which takes bets on sports events based on odds that are agreed upon in advance. In the UK bookies offer a wide range of bets for individuals to choose from, ranging from golf to football, tennis, horse racing and greyhound racing. Occasionally novelty bets will arise such as whether or not there will be a white Christmas or who will be elected to a specific office. Depending on where you are in the world depends on whether or not bookmaking is legal or illegal, with bookmaking generally considered illegal in the United States, while the UK runs bookies through the IBAS, which is in industry-standard organization which is strictly governed. Ever since the National Lottery came into play, bookmaking has been completely legal in the UK and is actually a contributor to the overall economy, making sports betting not only a popular activity but a way to boost the economy.
