Spread Betting Explained

June 28, 2010

Spread betting can be one of the more complex systems of betting which is used by customers in a bid to win more money.

Sports such as football and horse racing often have very complex spread betting systems, which are hard for people new to gambling to understand. It is important to know a few basic facts so you don’t end up spending huge amounts of money unnecessarily.

To begin with, spread betting is huge business in football. This type of betting will allow a customer to bet a number of times on the same game or to bet on multiple games with a single bet.

An accumulator is a form of spread bet which allows a customer to pick a number of games and the results. The stake will apply to getting all of these results correct and the possible win sums can be quite large.

Another sport which uses complex spread betting is horse racing. This will commonly come in the form of trying to pick the winners of each race at one meeting.

Spread betting can also be applied to horse racing for single races. Customers will try and predict the order that horses finish in, in order to win more money for a smaller amount of cash.

Of course the odds will always be smaller for spread betting but the point is that a customer does not have to make as big a financial commitment and if they do win, the sum is often huge.

Why not join the new wave of betting online?

June 26, 2010

Online betting has really taken off as the technology has improved at an exponential rate over recent years. Where formerly the opportunities for playing sophisticated games like baccarat and poker were severely limited by lousy dial-up speeds and inadequate security software these can now be played with ease as broadband has become ubiquitous and software has improved dramatically.

Web-based and download-based online casinos have never seen so many new customers, with people who would never have entered a real casino now flocking to the virtual ones.

With web-based casinos it is not necessary to download any special software in order to play, with browser plug-ins doing the bulk of the work, although you’ll need a decent bandwidth to handle the graphics, animation and sound.

Download-based online casinos do require a download of some free software. These do not rely on browser support and are generally faster than their web-based counterparts, as the programmes are housed in the software client. The small downside is that malware might creep in, and the initial software download can take some time.

But apart from casino games, there are many other gambling opportunities out there in the virtual world, from old favourites like bingo and scratch cards to backgammon, sports betting, lotto and much, much more. In fact, you’ll be spoilt for choice, and will probably need to take some time in checking out a selection of the online betting and online gambling sites before settling on any one to play your favourite game.

What are Teaser Bets?

June 25, 2010

Teaser betting is another form of sports betting that allows a participant to combine bets on two or more different games, adjusting the point spreads for the two games against a lower return on any bet that actually ends up winning. In terms of sports betting, this is most commonly seen as a wager made between individuals relating to basketball and football. An example of this would be a multi-team wager, where the bettor chooses a minimum of two teams and is allowed a series of points which he is allowed to add or subtract to the teams chosen to improve the point spread. While the minimum is two teams, it is not uncommon for some sports betting participants to choose up to 15 teams.

In sports betting there are generally two types of teaser bets used. The first kind is the Super Teaser, which allows the participants choose three to five teams and assign a large number of points to add or subtract to the spread of their selections, which results in less money than that which is risked in one bet. The second type is the Vegas Teaser, which is a combination of a parlay and a teaser where the bettor receives fewer points to spread between his selections, but the more teams the individual chooses the higher the payout can be.  Teaser bets are most often seen in football betting and basketball betting, and while the odds are such that the payout can be significant, all of the teams selected must win in order for the bettor to win their wager.

Gambling – Brief Overview and History

June 23, 2010

Gambling is defined as the wagering of something of material value or money on some type of event that has an uncertain outcome.  The purpose is to win additional material goods and/or money.  It is fairly common in gambling for the outcome of the event to be witnessed within a short period of time.  Where gambling is concerned, the term “gaming” often refers to a wagering activity that is permitted by law.

It has been documented that gambling dates back to ancient times and at some point in history, there has been evidence to show that most cultures have supported it in a variety of different forms.  Dating as far back as 2,300 BC, evidence of gambling has been found at various sites in China.  In Egypt, a pair of dice made from ivory was found, believed to have been made somewhere around 1,500 BC.

Writings on a tablet, found within one of the pyramids of Giza in Egypt, spoke of gambling.  It is also documented that the ancient people of Greece, India, and Rome also practiced some different gambling forms.  Gambling has also played a significant role in certain country’s histories.  For instance, King Olaf of Norway and King Olaf of Sweden reportedly got together in order to gamble for the rights to the district of Hising.

Finally, England’s King Henry VIII banned gambling when he discovered that his military troops were spending more time wagering instead of attending to their duties and responsibilities.  However, by the Middle Ages, gambling had grown to be quite a popular activity.

The big advantage of online poker

June 22, 2010

A big advantage of online poker tournaments is that you can play them from your own home. While the convenience of playing from home is great, it can be especially important in an online poker tournament. Poker tournaments, if you play well enough to finish in the money, can take five hours or more to complete. In a live tournament, you will be spending all of that time in the casino. Because at a live poker tournament at a casino, you will be spending all that time there and, let’s face it, some players may not have the endurance to spend hours and hours at a casino. For these players the online poker tournament is ideal when you have all the comforts of home at your fingertips. With online poker you can keep constant track of your standing in the tournament, not always possible at a live tournament.

You can always find a free poker tournament online. Most casinos run at most one or two poker tournaments a day, but online poker tournaments are run around the clock, so you can get tournament experience as often as you like.

Gambling and Social Responsibility

June 17, 2010

Like many things, when done in moderation gambling can be fun and entertaining. But gambling is also one of those activities that can be addictive, and like alcoholism or smoking it can be destructive. It was not too long ago that betting companies and other gambling providers had no recognised or legal responsibility towards the care of those who gambled – be it online gambling, sports betting, bingo, casinos, etc. – but with the more recent, major deregulation of gambling in the UK, gambling providers now have a legal duty of care, or “Social Responsibility”, towards their customers.

Staff are now taught to look for certain signs that someone may have problems with gambling, and they are also coached on how to discreetly approach someone and let them know what their options are if they are having personal issues with gambling.

In any gambling location you will now see mandatory notices and literature about Social Responsibility. These are free to take and to look at, and they provide the gambler with useful information with regards to gambling and the risks. Customers have the option, if they feel it necessary, to self-exclude themselves from a gambling location for a period of six-months, which can be reviewed after this period ends and continued if need be. In addition to the help and information available from gambling locations and betting sites, gamblers can visit the GamCare site www.gamcare.com. GamCare provides information, advice, and support to anyone who thinks, or knows, they have a gambling problem.

Betting in the Internet Age

June 15, 2010

There’s never been a better time to take up gambling. The traditional shops in the High Street are now clean and sumptuously furnished thanks to the relaxation of the archaic gaming laws a few years back, and when you step through the door of a Ladbrokes or William Hill nowadays you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The environment is fresh and relaxing, the staff is friendly and these places are generally more like hotel reception areas than the disreputable venues they once seemed to be.

But the real action in the gambling world is taking place in cyberspace, where online gambling and online betting have really taken off with improvements in internet technology. Sports betting, football betting and a whole range of other opportunities now exist to test your skills from the comfort of your own home and maybe win some big money.

Betting sites have experienced explosive growth in recent years, and thousands of people are flocking to them either for the fun of placing a bet or in the hopes of making a killing. From bingo, scratch cards and slots to financial spread betting and online poker and roulette, there’s something for everyone, from the complete novice to the hardened gambler.

Security software is now such that your details are perfectly safe online, and there are a number of secure payment systems used to make transactions – hopefully directly into your account!

Take a look at what’s out there and you’ll be amazed at the world of opportunity for the modern punter from any walk of life.
