Online Poker History

January 19, 2009

In simple terms, when the game of poker is played online, it is termed as online poker. In reality the game of poker involves large tables and hence a lot of money is required to establish a gaming parlour where it can be played. However, playing poker over the Internet has dramatically cut such costs and has also resulted in a significant rise in the number of poker players world-wide.

Live “brick and mortar” venues can usually scare off many new players who may wish to try their hands at the game. Such poker rooms are also sometimes located in hidden casinos with limited accessibility. In contrast, visiting online poker rooms is a relatively easy affair.

However, playing poker online has its own disadvantages sometimes. It can lead to certain types of fraud, especially in cases where different players conspire amongst themselves. To avert any such happenings, many modern online poker rooms have security employees who have the authority to keep a check on the number of cards played by any player. A constant check is also kept on the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a particular player, thus preventing players from using fraudulent methods to win any game.

Talking about the history of online poker, it was first played around the late 1990s with the IRC free poker going online through Planet Poker. It offered the first online card room that led to real money games afterwards. The first ever online poker game that involved cash flow came into being on January 1, 1998.
