Internet Gambling Controversies

February 23, 2010

As with every sort of major industry, sports betting has its share of skeletons in the closet. Most people are aware – at least in passing – of the dangers of gambling addiction, and opponents of internet gambling and online betting argue that the widespread acceptance and ease-of-use associated with online betting has only increased the number of people who have become addicted to gambling, and exponentially increase the risks of becoming addicted to online betting as a result of being able to log on from anywhere, including a cell phone.

Beyond that, one of the major issues facing internet gambling websites is the fact that some countries, like the United States, have confusing or conflicting laws regulating internet gambling. For example, the state of Nevada considers internet gambling legal, but the United States government as a whole does not, and as a result of US attempts to restrict online gambling websites’ access to their domestic market, the World Trade Organization has made several rulings against the United States government in regards to fair trade practices.

Compulsive gambling can be a problem for anyone, but more so for professionals. The ease-of-use related to the internet phenomenon in online gambling has definitely introduced more individuals to the world of sports betting, but whether or not it is due to the nature of online betting or simply the addictive personality of an individual is still a matter of debate. While the United States might have fairly strict regulations regarding internet gambling, the rest of the world doesn’t necessarily see eye to eye with them on the subject.
