One of the most popular games at casinos and online gambling websites is blackjack, where players must get their hand to as close to a value of 21 as possible in order to beat a dealer without going bust.

The fundamentals of blackjack see each player and the dealer dealt two cards. Cards with a face value of 2 through 9 keep their value, while aces are worth either 1 or 11 and a ten or picture card is worth 10. Based on the value of the two cards they are dealt, a player must decide whether he wants to keep his two cards as they are or receive additional ones. If a player is dealt two of the same value card, they have the ability to split them, while if a player’s hand goes over the value of 21 at any point then they are ‘bust’ and lose their stake.

The dealer in blackjack usually plays by the strict house rules of having to take an additional card on any hand value up to 16 and stick on 17 or above. Should the dealer go bust, all the players who did not go bust themselves win.

The name ‘blackjack’ comes from the best hand which a player can receive – an ace and any ten or picture card. Because of the rarity of this hand, players receive a higher pay out, usually at odds of 3/2, rather than the usual pay scale of evens for a winning hand.
